TANKER Foundation

Treating the poorest kidney patient in the world

ISN Fellow Sudakshina Ghosh from Tanzania trained at the Madras Medical Mission and got involved with India's TANKER Foundation, which helps the country's poorest kidney patients. Host mentor and TANKER Founder Dr. Georgi Abraham believes more fellows from Africa and South Asia should be encouraged to train in India as it "adds value to their training by seeing and experiencing nephrology care in a low cost setting" .

Dr. Ghosh's gained hands-on training in Chronic Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), haemodialysis and renal biopsy, and learned about awareness and prevention programs. Finally, she presented clinical research at the World Congress of Nephrology 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Manipur Dialysis Unit Inauguration

Dr. Georgi Abraham MD. FRCP Nephrologist, Founder Trustee TANKER Foundation was on a visit to Manipur for a scientific lecture on CKD patients and the impact of Haemodialysis and their livelihood. Out of 8 North Eastern States only seven nephrologists are available and five of them are located in Gauwhati. It was found that the care given for CKD patients was in the lowest possible scale. Many of them suffered either due to inadequate facilities or due to the unaffordability of treatment.

This prompted Dr. Georgi Abraham and TANKER Foundation to raise funds to set up a dialysis unit at Manipur. Dr. Shaarath Kumar Prof. Nephrology, Manipur agreed to support the underprivileged suffering from CKD and Rev. Fr. Lijo of CMC, Manipur came forward to house the dialysis unit in CMC,Imphal.

TANKER Foundation with the support of donors mobilized funds for 4 dialysis machines, RO Plant and other required equipment for the dialysis center to the tune of Rs.33 lakhs. Fr. Lijo deputed a team of his committed staff to get trained in dialysis in Chennai. Training was given by Dr. Georgi and his team at MMM Hospital and by Ms. Padma .G of TANKER Foundation,at the Ambattur Rotary Hospital Unit.

This is another milestone for us in our work, by serving the underprivileged suffering from chronic kidney disease in North East India. The inauguration was held on 27th February 2016 at 3 pm in CMC,Imphal,Manipur.
